Sea Kelp has been a key ingredient in Skin Actives products since the company’s founding. It’s almost as important as the foundation on which we built our business. We use it in many of our products, and we often point out its importance when people ask for advice.
What is Sea Kelp Coral, you ask? What is the benefit to your skin?
What is Sea Kelp Coral?
In many ways, Skin Actives Scientific Sea Kelp Coral is exactly what it says on its jar. This ingredient is derived primarily from sea kelp. It’s a type of algae found in the northern hemisphere.
Our sea kelp comes from brown algae.
It is important to note that brown algae contain different biochemicals, including polysaccharides and pigments, which make up their cell walls. This is good news for us because other biochemical structures can have other properties that are beneficial to our skin and health.
Sea Kelp Coral, however, is not just raw alga in a jar. This doesn’t sound appealing.
The brown algae at Skin Actives is only the beginning. This plant material is rich in biochemical compounds that are beneficial to the skin. We then cultivate beneficial bacteria to enrich the stock with prebiotics, which will benefit the skin by providing even more vitamins and building blocks that our skin can use to produce collagen and Hyaluronic Acid. We then take it a step further by adding more algae antioxidants!
This viscous gel will make your hair and skin feel fresh and vibrant!
Sea Kelp Coral Benefits for Hair and Skin
Sea Kelp Coral has been proven to be extremely nutrient-dense and is a great supplement for collagen and antioxidants. It does so much more than that, and that’s why it is so amazing!
Sea Kelp Coral’s antioxidant activity not only helps to fight reactive oxygen species but also reduces the appearance of irritation and redness.
When applied to the skin, the fucoidan in Sea Kelp Coral promotes and supports the synthesis and fighting of free radicals.
This all helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. We all worry about this, even though we know we shouldn’t.
You can make your sea kelp skin care products
You can easily make these blends at home!
Conditioning Hair Mask
Let your hair soak for a while in Sea Kelp Coral, especially if you feel it’s feeling dry and brittle. This can appear like thick hair gel. Apply it when you’re not going out or just before bed. Allow the sea kelp to soak into your scalp and hair for an intense feeling of rejuvenation. Use the sea kelp alone or with Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF) to promote hair growth or Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase ( MSR) to combat greying hair.
Face Mask for Soothing Skin
It’s easy to overexpose yourself, especially during the intense summer months. Did you know the aloe you buy in the big-box stores to soothe your sunburn has alcohol as a preservative? You don’t want alcohol on your skin, even if it’s a small amount. Mix a vial of epidermal-growth factor (EGF) with sea kelp and apply it to your face. You can use it like the old standby aloe vera. We guarantee you’ll prefer ours!
Exfoliating face mask
Hannah Sivak, our founder’s favorite, loves this recipe. Here is her secret recipe.
“Mix the sea-kelp coral powder with a teaspoon of plain yogurt. Full-fat yogurt is best. This will provide nutrition as well as a mild alpha-hydroxy acid exfoliation. For exfoliation, add some fresh kiwi or pineapple puree. After rinsing the mask, your skin will be smooth and fresh. Kiwi and pineapple both contain proteases. Papaya is also good, but if your skin reacts to food allergies, you may want to try it. If you take a nap, rinse your face well afterward. Otherwise, the mask may dry into a film and stretch your skin.
Super Nourishing Body Cream
Try mixing it with our body lotion if you’re looking to spread that nutrition mix all over your skin but don’t want the cost of a gallon to be too high. In a clean and sanitized container, combine the two ingredients. Whip until it is a nice, even consistency. You’ll then have a silky, smooth carrier for those wonderful nutrients!
Environmental Concerns
In fact, the algae that we use in our bioferment is Laminaria digitalata, which is grown in the sublittoral zone of the northern Atlantic Ocean. It is harvested by the State of Maine, following sustainable harvesting regulations. The USDA Organic label is also attached. You can read in the New York Times that using our sea-kelp bio ferment will help the environment, as kelp is an excellent sink for carbon dioxide. The kelp forest is a great place for cute otters to nest.
