
Seaweed has been a hit in the food and health industries over the past few years. Seaweed is a superfood that has many benefits. It can be used to replace salt in vegan diets or as an alternative food. It is for this reason that seaweed appears in many vegan products and recipes.
Understanding the type of seaweed you are using is important to get the maximum benefits from your seaweed product.
We’re going explore the differences between two important terms today: seaweed and Kelp. What are the differences between them, and what should your supplier look for?
When you search for seaweed, it can be not very clear to see so many different terms. You may not know the difference between seaweed and Kelp (and who can blame you?). If you don’t know the difference between seaweed, Kelp, and algae and want to clarify spirulina and sea vegetables, then this is the place for you!
Seaweed includes what
Seaweed is a very general term that encompasses over 10,000 species. Also known as marine macroalgae, seaweed is a large type of algae that grows in water. To succeed, seaweeds use sunlight, carbon dioxide from seawater, and nutrients from the water. It comes in many different shapes, colors, and flavors! As an example, we use the seaweed Ascophyllum Nodosum, which is also known as egg-wrack and knotted-wrack. The brown seaweeds are the most common, while the two other main color groups are red and green. These different colors are easy to find on the beach near rock pools.
Ascophyllum Nodosum grows between low and high tide. It is between the low tide and the high tide. When the tide is low, the seaweed will be exposed, while when it is high, the seaweed will be covered. The extreme conditions (wet to dry, UV levels, predators, etc.) are repeated twice daily.
When talking about seaweed as food, the phrase “sea vegetables” is often used.
What is the difference between sea kelp and seaweed
Sea kelp is a popular sea plant that has many health benefits. It also has a high nutritional content. However, it’s not the same thing as seaweed.
The term seaweed can be used for many marine plants and algae. Sea kelp, however, is more specific. Sea kelp is the largest group of seaweed. Sea kelp can be quite large, whereas seaweeds are often smaller.
Seaweed can be divided into three categories: red, brown, and green. The color of the seaweed has an impact on how much sunlight it absorbs through photosynthesis. This determines how close it can grow to the surface of the ocean. Sea kelp, which can be any color, is labeled officially as brown seaweed.
Both have distinct habitats for growth. Seaweed can be found in all marine environments, such as oceans, rivers, and lakes. Kelp, on the other hand, is found mainly along rocky coasts and in saltwater. Due to its larger size, sea kelp requires nutrient-rich water. As we mentioned previously, Kelp belongs to the brown seaweed group (the same large group as Ascophyllum Nodosum). The kelps, however, are larger than our Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed, and they grow at the lowest part along the shore. They can be seen below the water, even during low tide. Kelp forests are beautiful and can grow up to several meters high. Laminaria digitalata is an example of a type of Kelp. Kombu is a common name given to kelps used in food.
Watch out for the species name. The term kelp, for example, is often used (mainly in North America) to describe all brown seaweeds.
All species of seaweeds and kelps differ in their nutritional composition. Brown seaweeds have a higher level of iodine in general than red, green, or blue seaweeds. Kelps may have extremely high levels. Kelps are often found in China and Asia. The stories can vary greatly, and it is important to understand this before you use them as a source of nutrition or food.
Iodine, an essential nutrient, is important for women’s health. It helps maintain a healthy thyroid gland (regulating hormones). You should know the amount of iodine that you consume and where it comes from. We measure the iodine content of each batch of seaweed we harvest.

Characteristics
Sea kelp and seaweed have their unique characteristics. Seaweed is distinguished from other plants by its unique internal structure. Holdfasts are the only roots that seaweeds have. They do not absorb nutrients but merely keep the plant in position. Seaweeds that lack holdfasts are able to survive simply by floating with the tide, being carried by ships’ hulls or by the tide.
The sea kelp is one of the largest species. Sea kelp, unlike other seaweeds, sticks to one spot and forms dense forests. These forests are often fully functioning ecosystems that provide food and shelter for marine animals. The sea kelp forest is also home to many other seaweeds and algae species.
The sea kelp can come in many forms. Bull kelp is one of the most common. It grows along coastlines and can live up to ten years. It can also reach lengths as high as 45 meters or 150 feet. Bladder Kelp can get a massive 50 meters and weigh hundreds of pounds. There are also smaller varieties of sea kelp, such as common Kelp or Asian Kelp. These kelps have an average length between one and two meters.
