We as humans don’t tend to like to stay in the same place too long. This sense of wanderlust has only increased as time has gone on and technology has increased. These days, the average American will changes home upwards of ten times in their lifetimes.
Why do people move? Why do people pack up their belongings and move on, looking for greener pastures? There’s no one sole reason out there, but there are many varied ones that contribute to a person’s decision to pack it all up.
What are some of the reasons to sell a house and should you be considering the sale of your own? Read on and we’ll walk you through what you need to know.
They Want a Better Home
Those who decide to sell their homes may simply not be a fan of the residence itself. This doesn’t mean there’s something inherently wrong with the home (though there might be), it simply means the home never or no longer suits their needs.
Often, size is a major factor. Early on in one’s life, with fewer resources, adults tend to cluster towards smaller homes. However, as people age and begin to start families, many begin to realize the need for a bigger living space.
This can happen later in life too, as aging parents need a place to go and some extra care.
Even without the addition of family, a homeowner might just get too frustrated with the lack of space they have. They might feel as if they can’t get any privacy in their home, or they might feel cramped and cluttered as a result of the available space.
The home might not meet their needs in other ways as well. Perhaps it’s too close to the highway or a heavy flow of foot traffic. The noise might be enough to drive them to sell.
Perhaps there aren’t certain utilities in the home they’ve decided they need, such as a dishwasher. Maybe there isn’t a proper backyard, or they want room for a pool.
No matter what the reason is, issues with the home itself are often a reason people decide to sell.
The Neighborhood Has Changed
Sometimes it isn’t the residence itself but the area around it. If you’ve spent a long time in one home, it’s not rare to see the world outside of this home change dramatically.
Maybe the area you live in once housed only a few people and had a quiet, sleepy demeanor. Now, it features hundreds of people and many more houses. It’s bustling and the environment has completely changed.
Many corporations have moved in and taken over what used to be a cute town center of small businesses. Perhaps, the friends and culture that you moved to the area to take advantage of have all moved out.
Changes happen and there’s no way to fight them. It’s important to realize when enough has changed that you don’t feel like sticking around anymore.
Managing Finances
The money one has in their bank account plays a big role in why people move as well. If someone’s career is going very well and they’re bringing in a lot of money, they might decide it’s time to move to a grander home.
Once people realize they can afford something better than what they have, they tend to just go for it. The home gets put up for sale and they go on the hunt for something better.
Certain homeowners might just want to tap into the equity that their homes have built up. Your home builds up value but as you’re living in it, it can be hard to actually access and liquidate this growing value.
The sale of a home can help to finally put that money back into your pocket. Whether you’re in need of the financial boost or simply just want to cash in on what you’ve earned, selling your home can certainly do so.

Homes also tend to get more expensive to maintain as they age. Major structures such as roofs will need to be repaired or replaced entirely after about ten to fifteen years.
Many homeowners decide it might be a smart idea to sell their homes and move on before the need for these repairs comes about.
New Life Changes
Other people sell their homes because a major change in their life has come around. For example, a new job may require someone to relocate. A transfer to a new position might also come with a move to a new city.
Some people sell their homes and want to start over new. Many Americans want to travel more and see their homes as a burden that is keeping them in one place. In this way, the sale of a home can be seen as a release from responsibility and an invitation to travel.
Some people simply might want to move closer to family or away from the place where they grew up.
Why Do People Move?
It’s a common question that many people have: why do people move? There are many reasons why people might decide to pack up and leave their homes, the above are just the tip of the iceberg. Understanding why others move might help you to make decisions about your own living arrangements.
