Please make your own DIY Flax Seed Gel to reap its benefits at any time. This DIY Flax Seed gel recipe will make your curls soft, fluffy, and free of flakes. It also smells incredible.

This is just a small sample of the community’s reviews on this recipe.

  • I made some and tried it out today. It beats the expensive products I’ve bought so far. This product is great for my curly and dry 3c hair. It gives me a good definition and a nice hold. After your hair has dried, scrunch it a few more times to get rid of the crunch.
  • This gel recipe has been my go-to for years. I add glycerin, a humectant (a substance that attracts moisture), and macadamia oil to give my curl’s body a shine.
  • No matter how much gel or mousse I use, my hair never gets gooky.
  • I love to use this product in my hair. It depends on how much I work out.

What you’ll need:

  • Water
  • Flaxseeds
  • A pot
  • Pantyhose or stockings
  • Jar with a lid
  • Essential oils such as rosemary, tea tree or lavender
  • Jasmine oil is a good example of scented oil

1. Stir together the 1/4 cup flax seeds and two cups of water in a small saucepan until they boil. Stir the seeds often to prevent them from sticking to the bottom.

2. You will see the water start to gel after a few moments. Watch the mixture while it is on the stove, as the more heat it receives, the quicker it will thicken. The consistency should be perfect — not too liquidy or thick, but not too thin either.

3. The foamy froth and what appears to be mucus will rise to the top when the water reaches a boiling point. Then, lower the heat to prepare a filter. Stockings are the easiest and most common trick to extract the maximum gel from flax seeds without burning yourself. You can still save the seeds, which you can reuse. I covered the opening of a mason jar with stockings or pantyhose. Make sure the stocking or sock is clean and new. I poured all the contents of the pot into the jar, and the stocking caught the flax seeds.

4. After the liquid has been poured into the jar with the flax seeds, use tongs to squeeze the remaining gel or drink out. The gel may be difficult to squeeze out depending on the thickness of your gel (again, this depends on how long it was left on the stove”), but do your best to squeeze as much gel as you can. Flip your stocking over and gather the flax seeds.

5. Then you can choose to either add some extra ingredients to give the gel a boost and make it last longer OR cover the jar to store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it. I added about one teaspoon of vitamin E, which helped to preserve the gel. It now lasts about three weeks instead of one or two.

Vitamin E oil has antioxidant properties that help to build and repair tissue. My vitamin E oil was made from capsules I had punctured and squeezed. I added a few droplets of lavender, rosemary, and tea tree oils. These oils are great for hair because they stimulate hair growth. Hair gel that can make your hair healthier? Yes, please! Jasmine is my favorite oil to smell, so I added some extra drops. You can use any scented oils you like.

6. Store your gel in the refrigerator after mixing it thoroughly. This will help your mixture to become more gel-like.

Why is this DIY gel better than all others?

This gel is a good example of what I think about hair gels generally compared to the one I used.

It’s alcohol-free

Other gels are not my favorite because they contain alcohol. Some of these can cause my curls to become brittle. Most gels make my hair look ashy, and it starts to flake off as soon as I scrunch my hair and remove the cast. My curls are not as fluffy and soft as I would like, even after scrunching. This gel has the exact opposite effect.

It’s flake-free

I have no flaking, and my hair feels soft. This gel is not as slippery and slimy to the touch as it appears. (But what gel has that much slip?) I recommend using a leave-in conditioner to detangle curls before applying the gel.

It’s not Sticky.

You will find that after scrunching your hands, they don’t feel sticky. This hair gel does not contain alcohol and will not dry out your curly hair. This gel does not give me the definition I love, but my hair is fuller, voluminous, and frizz-free throughout the day.
