Five Top Tips For At-home Practice:

1. Maintain your practice schedule. It can be tempting now that schools are closed to continue your practice, but regular practice is key to being a successful musician. Keep up your practice schedule from the previous year. The key to success is to stick to a schedule and to practice at the same time every day.

2. Your friend is technology. You may worry about missing lessons for a couple of months because music schools are closed. You can watch YouTube tutorials, use piano apps or listen to podcasts. Any online resource will be better than nothing. Check out our blog for a variety of free resources.

3. Listen to music. Listen to new music every week. Why not try different genres? You will be motivated to practice more if you listen to different types of music. It may also teach you new skills.

4. Plan ahead. Set short-term and long-term music goals. Having a goal in mind can motivate you and increase your productivity. Plan how you’ll achieve your goals in a specific timeframe. A simple short-term objective could be to learn the c major key. Long-term, you might want to learn how to play an entire song on your instrument. Take notes about what you should work on to keep track of your practice. You can use worksheets and handouts to help you. A homework journal will also allow you to keep track of what you need to improve.

5. Enjoy it. It is important to enjoy yourself when you are learning an instrument and practicing it. Make practice time enjoyable, not a chore.
