Different Types of Jean Cuts

Finding the right size jeans is hard enough, but there are also countless types of jean cuts (and even subtypes, such as the slim boot) as well. We’ve compiled a simple list of the most common jeans styles for you. Whichever you choose, wear it with confidence!

Boyfriend jeans are known to be a looser, more relaxed fit. They are great for a casual, weekend look. Heavily distressed denim is popular for this look.

You can identify bootcut jeans by the slight flare near the bottom. They are unsurprisingly great for ankle-length and calf-length boots.

Straight Leg

Straight-leg jeans do not flare out at the bottom like bootcut jeans. They have a straighter line from hip to base. These sometimes have a relaxed fit similar to boyfriend jeans depending on your body type.

Flare or bell-bottom jeans are more dramatic than bootcut jeans. While bootcut jeans flare out near the ankle, flare jeans start to gradually widen mid-thigh.

Skinny jeans don’t flare at all. Stretchable fabrics are popular for this style, so they hug your body and accentuate your curves.

Jean Cuts for Your Body Type

Now that we’ve discussed some of the most common types of jeans, we can dive into the common question of “what are the best jeans for me” given current jean trends.

Please remember that there is no hard and fast rule about what you can and can’t wear.

For example, fashion used to teach us that curvy girls can’t wear skinny jeans. Well, that’s ridiculous. Paired with the right top, shoes, and other accessories, curvy girls can absolutely rock skinny jeans.

Our goal is to make you feel as confident as possible with the below guide. However, it’s just that — a guide. Wear whatever makes you feel like the confident queen you are!

Apple Shape

If you are an apple body type, you tend to carry your weight in your waist area. You also may have slim legs and larger breasts.

Our aim is to elongate this figure by drawing the eye away from the midsection. How do we do this? By drawing attention elsewhere.

Apple shape body types look amazing in mid-rise jeans that sit slightly above the waist. Bootcut jeans are also great for creating balance on your lower half.

High-waisted jeans are challenging for apple shapes, as are low-rise jeans. These tend to unflatteringly accentuate your waist and create an unbalanced look.

Pear Shape

If you have a pear shape body, you carry your weight in your hips. This means your hips are the widest part of your body and more narrow than your shoulders. Even more narrow is your waist.

This body type is actually one of the most common.

The easiest options for pear-shaped bodies are similar to apple shapes in that we want to create balance. You can achieve balance by wearing bootcut jeans that elongate your legs. Make sure these are fitted, though, so they don’t appear overly loose and sloppy.

Another great option is boyfriend jeans, which allow for extra room in the hips and butt.

Since we want to draw attention away from the hips, you don’t want jeans with large belts or pocket details. You also want to avoid pockets that are too small and make everything else seem bigger.

Hourglass Shape

You have an hourglass figure if you have a proportionately full bust and hips but a small waist.

The types of jeans that work best for this body type are those with wider legs and some flare. Bootcut and flare/bell-bottom jeans are great.

However, you want to avoid anything overly flared. If the flare surpasses your shoulders, it will make you look unbalanced. It’s also essential that you have a snug fit in your waist to avoid an ill-fitted look.

Hourglass figures can pull off the straight leg and skinny jeans too. You want to avoid overly tight materials, but these styles can show off your curves!

You also want to avoid the loose or relaxed look, such as boyfriend jeans. The loose material will cause you to look larger than you are.

Strawberry Shape

If the widest part of your body is your shoulders, you have a strawberry-shaped body. Your body will narrow downward, meaning you have slim hips and butt.

As far as jeans go, this is a very versatile body shape. You can pull off virtually any of the various jean styles. Try out baggy boyfriend jeans or tight skinny jeans.

For strawberry shapes, tops are going to be more important as far as creating balance for your body. Avoid tops that make your shoulders appear larger, like those with a lot of volume or distracting patterns.

Banana Shape

If you have few curves, square shoulders, and a generally straight figure, you likely have a banana-shaped figure.

Your body type looks great in jeans that sit either high above the hips or low on the waist. This will help to create a better-defined waist.

More relaxed styles such as boyfriend cut or straight legs can further hide any shape of your body.
