Many people love Israel, regardless of their faith or cultural background. I’ll share my top 10 must-see things in Israel. Although there were many safety concerns, I felt secure and would recommend Israel to anyone.
Top Things to Do in Israel
Relax in the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is at the bottom of the earth and is full of minerals that are good for you. The Dead Sea is a unique experience that can’t be described.
You can purchase mineral-rich mud for just a few shekels. Ein Bokek, a small town on the Dead Sea, has a few good hotels (which can be very costly) and good-sized public beaches.
Visit the Old City of Jerusalem
We spent most of our time in Jerusalem during our 10-day Israel trip. There are many things to do in Jerusalem. One of these is to visit the Old City of Jerusalem.
Many sites are essential to different religious and cultural groups. These include the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Dome of the Rock.
A tour of the holy city is highly recommended. A few companies offer a guided 2-hour walking tour “free” (tips not required). This service is available at the Old City information booth or your hotel/hostel. They will direct you in the right direction.
Tunnels of Hezekiah in the City of David
The ancient city of the City of David lies just outside Jerusalem. There are many archaeological sites in the Old City. One of the most interesting is Hezekiah’s Tunnels. These tunnels were once a source of water for ancient times.
You can now walk through the tunnels to see the incredible engineering done thousands of years ago. But be careful. The tunnels are flooded to the knees.
Visit the Western Wall to Take a Tour through the Underground Tunnels
Many Jews visit the Western Wall to pray, a significant site. Friday night, the beginning of the Sabbath is the most popular day for Jews to visit the Wall. Only a tiny portion of the Wall can be seen from the Western Wall.
You can only see the size of underground tunnels if you take a tour. One of the structural rocks, which is more than 40 feet long and weighs in at over 500 tons, will give you an idea of the tremendous underground tunnels.
Mount Olives hike
Mount Olives offer one of the most spectacular views of the Old City. Mount Olives is a large cemetery. Other important sites include the Church of the Ascension, the Garden of Gethsemane, and the Church of the Ascension. This is the location where Jesus prayed before his execution. You’ll find olive trees that date back over a thousand years here.
Visit West Bank
The West Bank, a part of Israel enclosed by concrete walls that keeps Palestinian residents in their homes, is an area. Banksy, a famous British graffiti artist, has covered large portions of the walls with his stunning graffiti. Christians love the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem. It is believed that Jesus was born there.
Take a dip at Tel Aviv Beach.
Some of my favorite beaches in Tel Aviv are located here. This is the ideal spot to relax or surf on a hot day. You can rent your board or take lessons from a few of the instructors on the beach.
Tour Masada
Masada, an isolated fortress, was built by King Herod in the early 20th century. The Dead Sea can be seen from the top of the defense. The Romans killed nearly 1,000 Jews after they conquered the fortress.
You could also hike up the fortress if you are adventurous and energetic. You could also take a cable car. To catch the sunrise, a popular activity is to hike up the defense at 4 AM.
Visit the Yad Vashem Museum
I understand what you are thinking. “Not a Museum.” I wouldn’t say I like museums either. Yad Vashem, however, is something a little more. It is Israel’s memorial to the more than 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust.
The museum provides details about the Holocaust during World War II and offers a wealth of information and rich resources as well as video, audio, and other multimedia.
See the Sea of Galilee
You could also visit some of the most important Christian sites, like Tabgha’s church, where Jesus often preached, including the Sermon on Mount.
Our favorite activity was standing knee-deep in the water and letting small fish eat the skin off our feet. This is a famous spa activity that people pay a lot for. You can do it here for free.
This area of Israel is also a great place to go on a long hike. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful views from the hills.
Israel is excellent for its rich cultural, religious, and historical heritage. There are many activities to be done, even if you don’t have a passion for history or culture.
There are many other activities I didn’t mention, but they are worth trying. These are the top 10 activities I enjoyed the most. However, it took a lot of work to exclude some other activities.
