Do Shrooms Show up on a Drug Test

Because there are many types of drug tests, it is difficult to say definitively which drugs will be detected on a drug test.

However, most routine drug tests won’t detect mushrooms. But certain specialized tests may.

How about a urine test?

Urinalysis is one of the most common types of drug testing, especially for employers who need to test their employees.

A 5-panel urine test is the most popular. It typically detects:

  • THC (the psychoactive component in marijuana)
  • Cocaine
  • PCP
  • amphetamines
  • Opioids

A 5-panel test for mushrooms will not show them up. The same applies to 8-, 10- and 12-panel tests.

There are however, specialized tests that can detect mushrooms. These tests are more expensive to run so they’re not usually used unless there is strong suspicion someone has recently taken mushrooms.

Mushrooms can be contaminated with drugs. Reports have surfaced that regular store-bought mushrooms were sold with PCP, which can be detected by most panel testing.

What about other drug tests?

Urine can be tested using blood, saliva, and hair to test for certain drugs.

A hair test can detect drug usage, including mushrooms, within the last 90 days. This type of drug test is not very common because of the high cost.

The rapid metabolism of mushrooms makes it difficult to detect them by blood or saliva tests.

How long will they remain in your system?

Because no two people are the same, it is impossible to predict how long a drug will remain in your body. Many factors can affect the length of mushrooms in your system. Most of these are beyond your control.

Several factors can affect the length of time mushrooms remain in your system.

  • How much you ingest
  • The mushroom species
  • How often you take mushrooms
  • Metabolic
  • Age
  • Body size and composition
  • Overall health
  • How much food and drink you have had to consume

Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound found in mushrooms, is generally absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract within 10 to 30 minutes. It then converts it into the compound psilocin.

Psilocin can be removed from the system in about 5 hours. However, psilocybin can take up to 15 hours to clear.

This is a different situation for everyone. However, it’s not likely that a person will have any mushrooms left in their system after 24 hours.

Research shows that a trace amount of the substance can be detected in up to one week for some people.

Are there ways to get them out of your system quicker?

You can’t get mushrooms out of your body faster than not eating any more.

The longer you consume psilocybin, the more it will stay in your system. It can also be detected if it is included in the tested drug panel.

Water may be able to help you get rid of it a little faster, but it is not enough to make the difference in passing or failing a drug test.

The bottom line

In the workplace or other settings, mushrooms and other hallucinogens don’t get routinely tested. However, someone could opt for a more expensive, specialized test if they wanted to.
