According to growing research indicates that your baby’s growth and temperature while you are pregnant may also be linked.
The heat is especially dangerous during the 1st trimester when your baby’s major organs are developing.
For example, this study found that hot tub use is associated with a higher risk of complications during the development of your baby’s neural tube, the precursor to the central nervous system.
American Pregnancy Association warns that dehydration can cause complications, including premature delivery.
Kids Health advises that you should avoid temperatures above 102degF for more than 10 minutes. It is important to avoid:
- Hot tubs
- Saunas.
- Long, hot baths.
- Electric blankets
- Spending too much time under the sun can be dangerous.
What about heating pads, then? Are they included in this category?
Can you use a heated pad during pregnancy?
Yes, the short answer is “yes”. Heating pads are a great tool to help reduce pain in muscles and joints, increase circulation, and improve mobility.
Lower Back Pain is a common pregnancy symptom. Most studies estimate that it occurs in approximately 50% of pregnancies. Heating pads are a great way to relieve back pain.
What is the caveat? The safety guidelines are important.
Can a heating mat cause birth defects?
If your core body temperature is too high and rises too quickly, you are at risk of pregnancy complications.
As long as you use the heating pad only on certain parts of your body and for shorter durations of time, both you and your child should be okay.
Avoid any activity or environment that causes your core temperature spikes.
How long can a heating pad be used safely while pregnant?
Use your heating pad with caution:
- Your heating pad sessions should not exceed ten minutes.
- Stop if you feel that you are overheating. During the first trimester, there are more risks.
- You will not be able to control your heating pad as well if you sleep with it on.
- Use the heating pad as your sole source of heat. Don’t use the hairdryer and heating pad at the same time.
- Speak to your doctor before using a heating pad if you have any concerns about your health.
Can I use deep heating on my back when pregnant?
How about a deep heat massage to relieve those aches and discomforts?
This product is not suitable for use during pregnancy because it contains anti-inflammatories that can harm your child.
