“What does the Clutch Pressure Plate do?

The clutch pressure plate plays an important role in your manual vehicle’s clutch system. This is a heavy-duty metal plate controlled by springs or a lever. It serves the main purpose of applying pressure to the primary clutch plate or clutch disc, holding it against the engine flywheel. This allows the engine crankshaft to be moved through the engaged clutch to the transmission/gearbox system. Then, energy flows through the driveshafts to the wheels.

The pressure plate applies pressure to the primary clutch plates. This stops the pressure plate from applying pressure, which causes friction between the clutch pressure plate (the clutch pressure plate), the clutch plate, and the engine flywheel. This stops the transmission of engine power and allows the driver to engage or change gears.

What Causes Pressure Plate Problems?

Many things could go wrong with your vehicle’s clutch system. This can cause damage to your pressure plate.

Worn Clutch Disk

Damage to the clutch pressure plate could result from a worn disc/plate. When the linings have been removed completely, the clutch disc/plate will rub against the pressure plate.

Broken fingers or spring

If any clutch pressure plate fingers protruding from the centre of the clutch plate are broken or bent, the clutch may not function correctly, and it might not be easy to engage your gears.

Overheating

The clutch system can produce a lot of heat if your car’s clutch slips. Parts such as the pressure plate and clutch damage can cause them to wear faster or warp from excess heat.

Incorrect Installation

It is crucial that the pressure plate and its release bearing are kept at a minimum distance. The thrust bearing could cause damage to your clutch pressure plate if it were incorrectly installed.

Cable Clutch Cable Incorrectly Adjusted

The clutch cable may be over-tightened, and the thrust bearing could press against the clutch pressure plates. This can cause slight clutch slippage and even damage.

Improper Use Of Clutch

Your clutch pressure plate can be damaged if the clutch is not used correctly. You can use the clutch to slow down your vehicle using engine brakes or to ride too hard on hills.

Signs of a damaged clutch pressure plate:

Slipping Clutch

The clutch will slip if the pressure plate is damaged. The following symptoms are common for a slipping clutch:

  • Vehicle power is not available
  • Higher RPM
  • Difficulty shifting or engaging gears
  • Reduction in resistance to the clutch pedal
  • The clutch has a burning smell
  • Incapacity to tow a trailer, or difficulty driving up hills
