Top 5 Domestic Drain Unblocking Methods

Every day, drains, sinks, and plugholes in homes across the UK are clogged. It’s the never-ending battle against obstructions and blockages in the pipes, which can have a negative impact on the entire drainage system.

If you notice a slow draining sink and smells, it could be a sign that your drain is blocked. You may be tempted to put it off and wait until the problem becomes a crisis, but this could lead you to make more work for yourself. We’ve compiled five tips on how to fix a blocked sink without calling someone.

1: Check your Plughole

Check your plug hole in the affected areas. This is the simplest thing you can do. You’ll have a better chance of dealing with your enemy if you are able to see it. If you remove the plughole or strainer rim that sits inside the pipe, then you will be able to get a good idea of the blockage. It’s usually a nasty, tangled clump or hair that is stuck in the pipe. Once you remove this, your water will drain freely again.

2) Remove the Plunger

It’s an old-school piece of equipment, but it still works as well as any other to remove whatever is blocking your pipe. You can also get large plastic cones that collapse. They do the same thing but look a bit more interesting. Once you have a good grip around the plughole, work the plunger mechanism until you hear it sucking. Release the plunger and it should remove the obstruction. You may have to try several times so be patient.

3) Baking Soda

This substance, also known as Sodium bicarbonate, will react with liquids at a rapid pace and fizz quickly. It expands, pushing anything in its path. If it doesn’t work, pour some vinegar or hot water down the drain to flush out the soda.

4) Cleaning Agents

If you own a septic system, chemical cleaners can upset the balance and cause it to overflow. Even if you do not have a septic system, you should still be careful. Avoid getting chemicals in your eyes or on your skin. Pour hot water into the plughole after letting this sit for a few minutes. This is the best way to clear your pipes, as it will break down any stubborn grime and muck.

5) Biological Cleaners

You can use biological cleaners if you want something lighter and less damaging to the environment. They use enzymes to break down blockages but have limited power compared to harsh chemical cleaners. This method can remove hair, soap, and other easily removed grime. However, if the grime is particularly stubborn, you’ll need to use more force.
