Wondering how much it costs to rent a dumpster?

Whether you’re moving or cleaning out a room in your home, renting a dumpster is something many people have to do.

However, the price can vary a lot. Depending on the size, time of year, and duration of time you need access, you might pay a little or a lot more.

Here’s more on the average cost of renting a dumpster, plus what goes into dumpster rental cost.

What are Average Dumpster Rental Prices?

Dumpster rentals cost between $250 and $500 on average, mostly depending on the size of dumpster you need to rent.

A $250 dumpster rental will usually get you a 10-yard dumpster. This is big enough to empty out a small home, basement, or attic in most cases.

On the upper end, you might pay $500 for a 40-yard dumpster. This is big enough for an entire home—roughly 6 tons of materials.

Beyond that, you’re probably looking at construction dumpster rental prices for business purposes, which could be more or less depending on your needs.

Rental Duration

Renting a dumpster for a long period of time can add to the price. Some dumpster companies are flexible, while others only give you a week to fill it with as much stuff as you need to. Any extra time costs more.

If you don’t know exactly how long you’ll need to rent, look for a local small business. Family businesses are generally more flexible than larger companies who may need to turn the dumpster around faster to other clients.

Delivery

Dumpster rental prices can also fluctuate if you live out in a rural area. If the company has to drive the dumpster to your home far away, there could be additional costs accrued.

This might be another reason to shop local when possible.

Location

Where you live could also change the price. If you’re renting in or around a major city, expect to pay 10 to 25 percent more than in a rural area.

This applies to most situations, though. Not just when you rent a dumpster.

Weight

Some companies will have a pay-as-you-dump model, meaning you pay for the weight inside the dumpster. There are generally two ways this is calculated.

First, you might pay a base fee. For example, a $250 flat rate for a 10-yard dumpster, which buys you two tons worth of material to be dumped.

If you exceed two tons, you’ll have to pay more.

The other option you might find eliminates the flat rate fee and strictly goes on weight. Dumpster companies generally charge by the ton or per-thousand-pounds.

Cost to Rent a Dumpster

The cost to rent a dumpster usually ranges between $250 and $500, depending on location, size, how long you need it for, and how much is being dumped.

Shopping local and calling around to lock in a low price is your best bet. There are lots of family-owned dumpster companies out there, so you might be able to score yourself a deal in your community.
